Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera had surgery on Tuesday and expects to be ready for baseball's spring training.


The Tigers announced on Twitter that their big-hitting third baseman had "successful core muscle repair surgery."


Cabrera will undergo rehabilitation for six to eight weeks after the procedure performed in Philadelphia.


Cabrera was hurt for most of the month of September and was clearly hampered by discomfort in the post-season with what the team described as a groin strain.


He batted just .262 in 11 games and had only two homers with seven runs batted in as the Tigers lost to Boston in the American League Championship Series.


After becoming baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years in 2012 -- leading the American League in home runs, batting average and runs batted in -- Cabrera again won the AL batting title this season with an MLB-best average of .348.


His 44 home runs and 137 RBI were second to Baltimore's Chris Davis, who had 53 home runs and 138 RBI.


However, Cabrera's power numbers declined in the final month of the regular season due to the injury. He hit only one home run and drove in only seven runs in September.
