The United States and Brazil signed three agreements to deepen their trade ties, representatives of the two governments said Wednesday.

The US administration of President Donald Trump is keen to deepen cooperation with Brazil, and The Brazilian government is keen to hammer out more deals before the US election lest the outcome of the vote throw the relationship into doubt, analysts said.

At a high-level meeting organized by the US Chamber of Commerce via video link on Monday, Brazilian President Yair Bossonaro revealed that the two countries had signed three new agreements. The aim, he said, was "to ensure good governance and curb corruption" and "to reduce red tape, promote further growth of bilateral trade, and bring beneficial results to investment flows".

The three agreements complement a bilateral trade agreement with the United States that took effect last year. The two sides signed a protocol outlining the content of the three agreements on Monday evening, saying the move will pave the way for future negotiations on expanding bilateral trade ties and identify priority issues to further eliminate trade barriers.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who attended the meeting, promised that the United States would step up its push for Brazil to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The OECD is known as the rich countries' club, which gathers most developed countries.

Pompeo also promised to expand U.S. investment in Brazil, with the Export-Import Bank of the United States planning to fund $450 million in projects this year, and the International Development Finance Corporation of the United States planning to invest about $1 billion in projects.

The Trump administration is aggressively pursuing deeper cooperation with Brazil in an effort to gain an edge in what it sees as a "great power" competition, Reuters reported. According to Mr Bossonaro, talks on these "ambitious" deals began when he met Mr Trump at Mar-a-Lago in The US in March.

Bossonaro, who took office as Brazil's President in January last year, told the conference: "Over the past year and a half, together with President Trump, we have raised the relationship between Brazil and the United States to the best level in history."

Trade in goods and services between the United States and Brazil is estimated to total $105.1 billion in 2019, Reuters reported. But Mr Bossonaro has had to weigh Brazil's relations with non-US trading partners. China is Brazil's largest trading partner.

The video summit coincided with a visit to Brazil by U.S. National Security Adviser Robert O 'Brien.

Brazil is anxious to sign a protocol before the Us presidential election on November 3 because of fears that the result could bring uncertainty to bilateral relations, AGence France-Presse quoted analysts as saying.

"A trade deal with Brazil would face more obstacles under [Democratic presidential candidate] Joe Biden," said The Eurasia Group, a US-BASED consultancy that studies global political risk.

Two Prominent Democrats in the US House of Representatives have criticized the Trump administration's deal with the Brazilian government. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neale said The Trump administration should not "endorse" Bossonaro's policies in areas such as human rights and environmental protection that have been criticized in the United States.

Representative Earl Bloomer, who heads the Ways and Means Committee's trade panel, said the new protocol is the latest "mini-trade agreement" the Trump administration has signed bypassing Congress.
